Firefighters are true heroes who go above and beyond to ensure the safety of those caught in dangerous situations. Their job is noble and coveted, so it’s of little surprise why so many youngsters wish to be firefighters when they grow up.

Understand that becoming a firefighter is not easy. And when you do become a firefighter, no two days will be the same. Not everybody is cut out for the job, especially those who can’t picture themselves running into a burning building to save someone. Being a firefighter is a rewarding career, but you need to make sure it is right for you.

Test Ready Pro, your firefighter prep service, offers what you need to know if you want to become a firefighter.

Get Fit

Firefighters can work long hours and to say they work in stressful situations is the understatement of the year. For these reasons, firefighters need to be physically fit. Get in shape and expect a physical exam before being hired.

Are You Old Enough?

You must be 18 at the time of application if you wish to be a firefighter. You must also be free from any criminal convictions.

First Aid Certificate

You must have a Standard First Aid certificate and CPR level HCP that is updated.

Be Motivated

Firefighters should be self-motivated. Since you will be on long shifts, you don’t want to find yourself just sitting there doing nothing while waiting for something to happen.

When you aren’t being a hero putting out fires and saving lives, you will be cleaning bathrooms, making your bed and doing dishes.

And if that isn’t enough, there will always be ongoing training and education.

Don’t Procrastinate

When it is acknowledged that there is work that needs to be done, get on it right away. If work is out off, it might not get done for a while.

This is because an alarm or unscheduled inspection will serve as a delay to the daily routine. This means that whatever needed to be done has to wait.

Bad Habits

Don’t bring your bad habits to the fire station. If you enjoy sitting around your house in your underwear endlessly scrolling through Facebook, that’s fine, just don’t do that at work.

Don’t be a poster child for the worst employee of the month, find out what is acceptable behavior at the fire station and act that way.

Seek Advice

Those who have been firefighters for an extended period of time will be more than happy to offer advice or tips. Accept all contributions because listening to wise firefighters will help you become a better firefighter.

Take the Tests

There is no better way to understand all of the ins and outs of being a fireman than by taking the firefighter tests. Even if you fail, at least you have exposed yourself to the process. Study more and you will succeed.
