If you’ve been thinking of taking your law enforcement career in a new direction, you might consider becoming a licensed private investigator. Whether you’ve decided on this career path because you’ve always found the idea of investigation and solving crimes to be fascinating, or your motivation is to help protect and serve the community in which you live, becoming a private investigator can be both challenging and rewarding. At Test Ready Pro, we know a thing or two about becoming a P.I. We offer a comprehensive Ontario private investigator course that you can take entirely online. Keep reading to learn more about it and to get tips on how to become a private investigator.
Who Can Become A Private Investigator?
Before you decide to become a private investigator in Ontario, you should make sure that you meet the basic eligibility requirements. The conditions are pretty straightforward — you have to be at least 18 years of age, be eligible to work in Canada, and have a clean criminal record. Keep in mind that when you apply for your license a background check will be performed, so a previous offense could come back to haunt you. While it’s not a requirement that you already work in law enforcement to become a P.I., many people do.
If you meet the eligibility requirements and have made the decision to become a private investigator, there are four basic steps you’ll need to take to become licensed by the Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services (MCSCS).
You’ll be required to complete an MCSCS-approved basic training course. The course must be a minimum of 50-hours and be provided by an MCSCS-approved school. If you’re looking for an approved Ontario private investigator course, Test Ready Pro is the most comprehensive one available. Our course consists of 11 modules that cover everything from an overview of the Canadian legal system to the general investigation process and interview techniques.
Once you complete your Ontario private investigator course, you’ll be ready to sign up for the licensing exam. The exam is administered by Serco Canada Inc. on behalf of MCSCS. The test is 60 questions long, in multiple-choice format, and you are given 90 minutes to complete it. You can learn more about the testing process and sign up for a test in your area by visiting the Serco website.
Another requirement of licensing is to show that you have a standard first aid level C CPR certificate. In order to get your certificate, you must receive training in various first aid principles such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway obstruction, wound care, and other emergency response techniques. Once you receive your CRP certificate, it is valid for 3 years, after which time you’ll have to be recertified. Contact us to discuss or schedule your first aid training.
Apply For License
After completing your training course and CPR certification and successfully passing your licensing exam, you can apply for your private investigator license. You can apply through the Service Ontario website or by mail. The cost of the license is $80.
